A shoppers paradise, the variousmarkets of Delhi offer a staggering array of goods ranging fromthe simplest of handicraft items to leading international brands.
Chandni Chowk (opposite RedFort) is the famous Mughal period market. It is the city's mostcrowded but diverse market. It's small shops in the narrow lanesoffer better bargain than any of the big showrooms elsewhere inthe city. The Sadar Bazaar and the Khari Baoli are the largestwholesale markets of northern India. - Sunday closed.
Connaught Place (C.P.) is famousfor department stores and big showrooms. Between the radial roadsleading to Janpath and Baba Kharak Singh Marg is the undergroundmarket, Palika Bazaarwhere 400 shops sell a wide range of products. Exactly oppositePalika Bazaar on the outskirts of C.P. is the KhadiGramodyog Bhawan where one can find at downto earth prices readymade garments in hand woven khadi cotton andsilk, fabrics and handmade paper. The StateGovernment Emporiums, located on the BabaKharak Singh Marg, offer a glimpse of handicrafts and providedetailed tourist information about the respective States. Anotheremporium which offers a rich glimpse into Indian Handicrafts isthe Central Cottage Industries Emporium on Janpath. The road side shops on Janpath offer a greatbargaining experience. Also along Janpath are stalls where onecan find readymade garments, embroideries from Gujarat andRajasthan and Tibetans selling jewellery and ritual objects. -Tuesday closed.
Another major attraction is the DilliHaat set up by Delhi Tourism. An upgradedversion of the traditional haat(periodic market), it offers delightful combination of delicaciesfrom all parts of India; craft, and food and cultural activities.There is an open air theatre where theme fairs and festivals areorganised from time to time offering tantalising glimpses of therich Indian culture. - Open all days of the week.
The Ambawatta Complex on thefringe of Mehrauli Village; Hauz Khas Village; and SantushtiShopping Arcade opposite Samrat Hotel, are other shoppingcomplexes of tourist interest.
Other popular shopping centresare - Central Market in Lajpat Nagar; Ajmal Khan Road Market andTank Road Market in Karol Bagh; and Sarojini Nagar Market. Allthese markets are popular for inexpensive readymade garments. -Monday closed. South Extension, a more upmarket has outlets ofalmost all international brands available in India. SouthExtension (Part-I is closed on Mondays and the Part-II is closedon Tuesdays).
