On the west bank of river Yamuna lies this serene spot, the memorial of the Father of the Nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi - Mahatma Gandhi to the Indians. A simple square platform (samadhi) of black marble marks the spot where the mortal remains of Mahatma Gandhi were consigned to flames on 31st January 1948, a day after he was assassinated. His last words 'Hey Ram' are inscribed as the base. The samadhi lies amidst wide lush green gardens and exotic trees. Prayers are held every friday evening. Every year special prayers are held on the 2nd October and 30th January, respectively the birth and death anniversaries of the Mahatma. |
