Originally called the All India War Memorial, this Arc de Triomphe like 42 meter high memorial stands majestically at the eastern end of Rajpath. It was designed by the English architect Edwin Luytens and built in 1931 to honour the soldiers of the Indian Army who laid down their lives in World War I. Names of 13516 soldiers are inscribed on its walls. After the Third Indo-Pakistan war in 1971, an eternal flame was lit, alongside the inverted bayonet and helmet of the Unknown Soldier, under the arch to commemorate the Amar Jawan (the immortal soldier). Closeby is the empty canopy which once housed a statue of King George V, since removed to Coronation Memorial, north of Old Delhi. |
