CONNAUGHT PLACE
| The most fashionable shopping and entertainment centre of the Capital and undoubtedly one of the most beautiful spots is very well planned and well built. Popularly referred to as 'CP' it was built in 1931 and named to commemorate the visit of the Duke of Connaught. The complex is made up of two concentric circles of colonnaded buildings surrounding a central park. The inner circle known as Connaught Place, its blocks numbered clockwise from A to F and the outer circle is known as Connaught Circus, its blocks numbered clockwise from G to N. Eight radial roads converge in the central park. The central park has a fountain in the middle surrounded by a beautiful lawn. Though circular in appearance, a closer observation shows that the complex is built in a horse-shoe pattern. IN 1995, THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA, THROUGH A LEGISLATION RENAMED CONNAUGHT PLACE AS RAJIV CHOWK AND CONNAUGHT CIRCUS AS INDIRA CHOWK, THOUGH THE PLACE IS STILL POPULARLY REFERRED TO AS 'CP'. |
